The European Edtech Alliance released a report on the 15th of January mapping the edtech ecosystem on the continent. A few interesting things to note from the report:
1. The €€€ are not flowing yet. European Edtech startups who participated in the survey are not making much revenue yet. 38% are below the 50,000€ / year mark. The report reasoned that this was because the startups were adding to the “global education efforts” marked by the pandemic. I’d be curious to see if this argument holds up for 2022’s data. There could’ve been a surge of new startups in 2021, skewing the average because of their pre-revenue statuses.
2. France is where the action is. Paris has twice as many startups as the next biggest city, London. France had over 250 edtech orgs respond to the survey. (While there were ~2500 respondents to the survey, it’s unclear if multiple people from the same org could respond…) As someone who is beefing up her own French fluency, this is exciting to see!
3. Focus on parent/teacher/student mixed products. Most products (54%) are targeting all three as end users. It’s unclear from the report what age the students are. Having worked on the spectrum of edtech age groups, from early childhood apps all the way to building learning experiences for adults and business leaders, I’d love to see the breakdown by age. My guess would be that most products focus on the middle of the age spectrum — Secondary school >> university.
Some interesting overarching findings on gender + type of edtech products are also in the report. You can check out a summary of the insights the Edtech Alliance made here.
